2007/12/10 Stationary CadenceThe gym is a great wet weather plan. JY and I were at the gym on Sunday afternoon while it poured outside. JY and I were on the treadmill together and I walked for 5 minutes to warm up then I couldn't resist and started running at a slow and comfortable pace.
I am pleased to announce that less than one month after surgery, I could keep at a 9.13 km/hr pace [wooooooooooo!] for a full 20 mins before the left side of my left knee started to feel a bit funny so I slowed down and walked the rest of the time on the treadmill. It wasn't painful, I just didn't want to push it.
Yeah, it's on treadmill and on zero resistance but hey, for 20 full minutes I was actually running.
Not sure how I celebrated. Probably having a silly grin on my face the rest of the workout where I did machines using only left leg where possible and did some dumb bells for upper body and lots of crunches.
My abs ache today, especially when I laugh. The rest of me is fine. 2007/12/9 The Light at the end of the TunnelIn my life, the light at the end of the tunnel is usually an oncoming train.
Yesterday at physio-theraphy, the therapist put me on 5 minutes of stionary bike cycling at practically no resistance. Things were looking up already. The new worksheet was titled "Advanced Lower Limb Exercises". The last exercise of the session the session was where she made a loop with an elastic band and around one of the legs of the physiotherpahy bed and I stepped through it. She wanted to assess how I was doing with one leg squat using the left leg. I must have done alright because she cleared me for cardio. I tentatively said, "Swimming, cycling, walking and...?" and she continued, "Light jogging, but more like walking and jogging on the treadmill. Don't overdo the jogging, focus on building strength in your left leg." I punched my fist in the air in a "YES!" and felt like a million dollars. So glad I pushed myself to do the physio-theraphy exercises. I had even sneaked in cardio in the form of long walks of at least half an hour, twice a day. Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel isn't an oncoming train. So glad I pushed myself to do all the physio-theraphy exercises. I even sneaked in long walks (45 minutes or more) even though I had not been cleared for cardio at that point. There was light at the end of the tunnel, knowing I can slowly start returning to an active sporty lifestyle. 2007/12/7 How much fitness?JY and I went to a gym yesterday and signed up. His company has a corporate plan with that particular gym. We were members of different gyms and it worked out better for me to join his gym (more locations) than mine. With 2 gym memberships and 1 yoga club membership, I have no excuses not to work out.
JY and I used to run and meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays with a long run on Saturday/Sunday. Now that I can't run for a while (if ever again), the gym is a good wet weather plan. It's been raining and the swimming pool colder than usual.
If we were outdoors and I walked while JY ran, I'd never see him. At the gym, it's nice to be side by side on the treadmill where he was happily running and getting a cardio fix after bad weather the last couple of days had given him cardio withdrawl. I walked the best I could and was only burning half the calories. Damn I miss running. The machine readout was just over a hundred calories, such a far cry from my running computer's display on the watch of over a thousand calories after a Sat/Sun run.
Depressing.
